Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing alongside Michael Jordan and Curtis Polk, defended their decision to take legal action against NASCAR. Hamlin emphasized the amount of money they’ve invested in the sport and how no other team is spending as much while performing at their level. He suggested that if Jordan has to invest his own money, it indicates a problem with NASCAR’s current structure.
Hamlin also spoke about Jordan’s passion for NASCAR, noting that Jordan has significantly reinvested into the sport as an owner, and the team is dedicated to improving the sport overall. When asked if NASCAR appreciates the contributions of 23XI Racing, Hamlin hesitated before saying probably not. Jordan, as the highest-profile team owner in NASCAR and one of only two Black owners, leads a diverse team with driver Bubba Wallace and a variety of crew members.
The lawsuit has sparked further concerns within the NASCAR community. Team owner Richard Childress questioned whether the terms he agreed to with NASCAR are the same for all teams, such as Hendrick Motorsports. This raises the issue of whether other teams that have already reached agreements will receive the same terms if 23XI and Front Row Motorsports secure a new deal through their lawsuit.
Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks noted the unprecedented nature of this situation in NASCAR. He highlighted the lack of a collective bargaining structure in the sport, contrasting it with other sports, and mentioned the uncertainty of how the lawsuit might reshape the landscape for all teams involved.
