Unbelievable: Tadej Pogačar Claims Record-Equalling Fourth Consecutive Il Lombardia Victory.

Tadej Pogačar has capped off his exceptional 2024 season with a historic victory at Il Lombardia, one of cycling’s revered Monument races.

By securing his fourth consecutive win in this challenging one-day race, Pogačar became the first cyclist since Fausto Coppi in the late 1940s to achieve such a streak, etching his name further into the annals of cycling history.

This win also emphasizes his unmatched dominance across multiple events this season, which included victories at both the Giro d’Italia and the UCI Road World Championships.

Il Lombardia, often known as the “Classic of the Falling Leaves” due to its autumn timing, is infamous for its grueling climbs and technical descents.

It was here that Pogačar demonstrated his tactical prowess and stamina, making a decisive attack on the Colma di Sormano, a notorious climb that has challenged even the best.

With just under 50 kilometers left in the race, Pogačar’s bold move left his competitors in the dust, allowing him to ride solo for the remainder of the course. He crossed the finish line in Como with a significant margin of over three minutes ahead of Belgian Remco Evenepoel, the Olympic gold medalist and one of his main rivals. Italian cyclist Giulio Ciccone rounded out the podium in third place.

This victory at Il Lombardia marked Pogačar’s 25th win of the season, a feat that underscores his consistency, endurance, and adaptability across various terrains and formats. Throughout the year, Pogačar has managed to compete at the top level in both multi-stage races like the Giro d’Italia and single-day events like Il Lombardia.

His strategic choices, supported by his team, have consistently proven successful, allowing him to stay ahead of a field that includes some of the most talented cyclists of his generation.

Reflecting on his latest win, Pogačar highlighted his team’s role in planning the attack.

According to him, the final 40 kilometers of the race were set to be a grueling one-on-one struggle, so his team’s preparation was key to making his early break successful.

Despite his numerous accolades, Pogačar remains grounded, attributing much of his success to his team and the strategic approach they implemented throughout the year.

For Pogačar, this win not only signifies the end of an extraordinary season but also reinforces his status as a modern-day icon in cycling.

With four consecutive Il Lombardia titles, he stands shoulder to shoulder with cycling greats like Coppi, and his achievements this season suggest he may have the potential to surpass even the legends of the sport.

As he heads into a well-deserved off-season, the cycling world is already looking ahead to what Pogačar will accomplish next year.
